MdAA Architetti Associati ::Tree House

FIRM MdAA
TYPE Residential Apartment
STATUS Built YEAR 2012 Trastevere, Rome, Italy
What remained of an old stable was converted into the apartment of a couple of men's fashion designers. In fact, Trastevere had a number of stables still in use until the early 1900s. These spaces were very large, compared to the average buildings in the area, and were generally covered with large trusses. The maximum interior height of this apartment is about 10 m. The main design-related challenge was how to fulfill the clients' request concerning the master bedroom: they wanted a private room completely closed off to the voices of guests using the large open space of the old stable on the ground floor, which would serve as the living room in the new house. Starting from here the project wanted to develop the idea of the ""tree house"", a complete cell with a bed, bathroom and dressing room, floating over the space of the living room. From inside the bedroom, a stained glass window in the top slot which makes you see the roof, allows you to keep eye contact with the surrounding area. The whole house, from the living area to the kitchen and dining room, revolves around a small patio: the divisions between the inside of the house and the patio are glass windows, in such a way that the tree house is visible from anywhere inside the apartment.
