L'unico momento in cui l'uomo si illude di tenere testa alla morte è quando attraversa il Tempo con un'opera o un gesto che parleranno di lui oltre la vita, come avviene con la nascita di un figlio o creando un capolavoro, quando cerca cioè di introdurre l'arbitrario nell'aleatorio. Ma non ricevendo notizie dall'avvenire sulla vittoria o meno nella sua battaglia più grande, il massimo che gli è concesso è di lasciare traccia del combattimento.
