Invecchiare non è solo un adattamento del corpo al trascorrere del Tempo, ma è soprattutto una rappresentazione dello spirito, perché salvo il dolore fisico tutto è immaginazione. Per questo l'anziano tende ad essere parsimonioso: non spreca, risparmia gas ed elettricità, lesina l'acqua del rubinetto. Conserva il mondo per conservarsi. Ossessionato dalla longevità, vive nel timore di non raggiungerla e per un malinteso della mente proietta l'ansia sulla materia, finendo per centellinare anche la vita delle cose.
