Non riesco a immaginare il Caso come l'esito di una lotta tra un numero infinito di possibilità. Credo piuttosto che sia regolato da leggi ben precise, ma se queste sono ancora sconosciute è perché la mente non può capire un sistema dotato di maggiore complessità. Destino, fatalità, fortuna o provvidenza sono i nomi che dà a questo difetto di intelligibilità, e le tante interpretazioni esistenti sottolineano appunto la sua approssimazione. Incapace di formulare una teoria a partire dai fatti, la ricostruisce arbitrariamente usando delle parole. In altri termini, quando non trova una causa per spiegare un effetto, chiede al linguaggio di descrivergli l'atto.
