Se le idee sono il prodotto della mente, come può il pensiero essere l'effetto di qualcosa di cui lui stesso è la causa? L'unica spiegazione plausibile è che fa propri dei principî già esistenti. Quindi, tutta la storia del sapere umano in realtà è una rievocazione. Se così fosse, da quando è comparso il mondo non ci sarebbero mai stati concetti o scoperte originali, proprio perché il compito della conoscenza consiste nel ricordare, nel riportare alla luce ciò che già esiste.
